How to Play

Goal: Combine numbered tiles to create a tile with the number 2048.

Controls: Use arrow keys on desktop or swipe on mobile to move tiles in that direction.

Rules: When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one. Each move, a new tile appears. Try to reach 2048 before running out of space.

About 2048

2048 was built in a single weekend in March 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli, a 19-year-old Italian developer, and it promptly took over the internet. It borrows its sliding mechanic from an earlier game called Threes, but simplifies the math: every tile is a power of two, and two matching tiles merge into their sum. The goal is to build a single 2048 tile before the 4x4 board fills up.

What makes 2048 so sticky is that every swipe moves every tile on the board at once. You are never placing one piece, you are reshaping the whole grid, and one careless swipe can wreck ten minutes of careful building. Runs past 2048 are possible too. The theoretical maximum tile on a standard board is 131,072, though very few humans ever get near it.

How to actually reach 2048

  • Pick a corner for your biggest tile and never move it. Most strong players lock it in the bottom-right and avoid pressing up at all.
  • Use only two or three directions for most of the game. Sweeping left-right along your anchored bottom row keeps the board ordered.
  • Build a snake: biggest tile in the corner, then descending values along the bottom row, then back along the row above.
  • Merge toward your big corner, not away from it, so mid-size tiles are always adjacent to the tile they will eventually join.
  • Slow down when the board is more than half full. Almost every lost run dies to one rushed swipe, not to bad luck.

FAQ

Can I keep playing after I reach 2048?

Yes. The game does not stop at the 2048 tile. You can keep merging toward 4096, 8192 and beyond until the board locks up. The score keeps counting the whole way.

Is every game of 2048 winnable?

No. New tiles spawn at random, and an unlucky string of 4s in the wrong spots can strangle even a well-played board. Good technique makes reaching 2048 likely, not guaranteed, which is part of the appeal.

Why did I get a 4 instead of a 2?

The game spawns a 2 about 90% of the time and a 4 about 10% of the time after each move. That small dose of randomness is what keeps identical strategies from playing out identically.

Does this version of 2048 save my best score?

Yes. Your best score is stored locally in your browser on this device, so you can close the tab and come back later. Clearing your browser data resets it.
