Rocket League Ranks Explained

Rocket League ranks climb from Bronze at the bottom to Supersonic Legend at the very top, and this guide walks the whole ladder in order, explains the MMR and divisions behind it, and shows why your rank can differ between playlists. Car soccer looks simple until you hit ranked and see eight named tiers plus divisions inside each one. Here is the complete picture, plus a realistic read on where most players actually sit.

Quick answer

Rocket League has eight ranks. Seven of them (Bronze through Grand Champion) split into three sub-ranks, and each of those has four divisions. The eighth, Supersonic Legend, sits alone at the top with no divisions. Your rank is tracked per playlist, so your 2v2 number can differ from your 3v3.

The full Rocket League rank ladder, in order

The structure nests three ways. There are eight named tiers. The first seven each contain three sub-ranks (for example Gold I, Gold II, Gold III), and every sub-rank is further split into four divisions (Division I to Division IV). Supersonic Legend is a single flat rank at the ceiling.

Rocket League ranked tiers, lowest to highest. Each tier except Supersonic Legend has three sub-ranks with four divisions each.
OrderTierSub-ranksWhat it means
1BronzeI, II, IIIEntry tier. Learning to hit the ball on purpose and rotate at all.
2SilverI, II, IIIReliable ground touches, first attempts at aerials.
3GoldI, II, IIIConsistent shooting, basic boost management, rotation forming.
4PlatinumI, II, IIIAerials land, teammates start passing on purpose.
5DiamondI, II, IIIFast, mechanical play with real positioning discipline.
6ChampionI, II, IIIAdvanced mechanics, deliberate plays, strong game sense.
7Grand ChampionI, II, IIIElite. Flip resets, air dribbles and clean team play are routine.
8Supersonic LegendNo sub-ranksThe top rank, added in 2020. The best of the best.

Before 2020, Grand Champion was the ceiling. Psyonix added Supersonic Legend (SSL) to give the very top a distinct badge, so anyone who remembers when GC was the summit is looking at an older ladder.

How MMR and divisions work

Under the badges sits a single hidden number, your Matchmaking Rating, or MMR. Win and it rises, lose and it falls. Your visible rank is just a friendly label mapped onto that number, and the four divisions inside each sub-rank are the fine-grained steps between labels. Climb through Division IV of a sub-rank and you promote to the next sub-rank; fall through Division I and you demote.

Ranks are tracked per playlist

This trips up newcomers constantly. Rocket League keeps a separate rank for each competitive playlist, so you might be Diamond in Doubles (2v2) but Platinum in Standard (3v3). The main ranked playlists are 1v1 Duel, 2v2 Doubles and 3v3 Standard, and each carries its own MMR and badge. A "true" rank does not exist across the board, only per mode. Most players treat 2v2 as their headline number because it balances individual skill and teamwork.

Rough rank distribution

Percentages differ by playlist and shift every season, and Psyonix does not publish a fixed table, so read the figures below as an approximate community picture for the popular team modes rather than exact numbers.

Approximate share of ranked players by tier in the popular team playlists. Varies by playlist and season.
TierApproximate shareRead
Bronze~3 to 5%Fewer than you would guess.
Silver~8 to 12%Early learning band.
Gold~18 to 22%One of the biggest clusters.
Platinum~22 to 26%The true center of gravity.
Diamond~18 to 22%Above average, mechanically sound.
Champion~9 to 12%Strong, deliberate players.
Grand Champion~1 to 3%Elite.
Supersonic LegendWell under 1%The very top.

Practically, hitting Platinum puts you right at the median and Diamond puts you clearly above it. Champion and above is genuinely rare.

How to climb the ranks

Rank in Rocket League is roughly two-thirds decision making and one-third mechanics, especially below Diamond. The fastest gains come from habits, not trick shots:

Rocket League ranks FAQ

What is the highest rank in Rocket League?

Supersonic Legend is the highest rank. It has no sub-ranks or divisions and sits above Grand Champion, which was the ceiling before Supersonic Legend was added in 2020.

How many ranks are there in Rocket League?

There are eight named tiers. Seven of them have three sub-ranks with four divisions each, and Supersonic Legend stands alone, so there are far more than eight actual rungs when you count sub-ranks and divisions.

Why is my rank different in each mode?

Rocket League tracks rank per playlist. Your 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 ranks are calculated separately from their own MMR, so they often differ.

What rank is average in Rocket League?

In the popular team playlists the median lands around Platinum, with Gold just below it. Reaching Diamond already puts you above most of the ladder.

Can you lose a rank?

Yes. Losing enough matches drops your MMR, and falling through the bottom division of a sub-rank demotes you to the one below.

My takeaway

Rocket League's ladder is eight tiers deep, nested into sub-ranks and divisions, driven by a hidden MMR and split across playlists. Chase clean rotation and boost management before flashy mechanics and you will climb further than you expect. Want more of competitive gaming without the pressure?
