The plastic Connect Four set has been gathering dust in a lot of closets, but the game itself is more fun than ever now that I can play it instantly in a browser. No box to find, no missing discs, no setup. I just open the page and drop a token. If you want to jump straight in, you can play Connect Four free online here right now, no download and no account needed.
How to start playing
It really is as simple as it sounds. Open the game page, the board loads in a second or two, and you click or tap the column where you want your disc to fall. The disc drops to the lowest open spot in that column, then the other player takes a turn. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.
- No download, the game runs entirely in your browser.
- No sign up or email, just open the page and play.
- Works on desktop, laptop, tablet, and phone.
- Completely free with no limits on how many games you play.
Play against the computer
When I am on my own and want a quick game, I play the AI. It gives me a reliable opponent that never gets bored and never quits halfway through. It is a great way to practice the strategy ideas I rely on, like grabbing the center column on move one and hunting for double threats. Lose a few, learn the patterns, and you will start beating it more often than not.
Play with a friend
The other option is pass and play on a single device. One person is red, the other is yellow, and you simply hand the phone or sit at the same keyboard, taking turns. It is perfect for a coffee break, a long car ride, or settling a friendly argument. Connect Four is quick, so you can squeeze in a whole best of five in a few minutes.
The rules, in case you need a refresher
The grid is seven columns wide and six rows tall. You take turns dropping discs into columns, and discs stack from the bottom up. The first player to line up four of their color in a row, column, or diagonal wins. Fill the board with no four in a row and it is a draw. That is the whole game, which is exactly why it is so easy to pick up and so hard to put down.
Quick tips before your first game
- If you go first, drop your opening disc in the center column.
- Before every move, check whether your opponent can win next turn and block it.
- Try to threaten in two places at once so they cannot block both.
- Keep your discs toward the middle, where more winning lines pass through.
If you want the full breakdown, I wrote a deeper guide on the strategy that wins most of my games. For now, the four tips above will already put you ahead of a casual opponent.
Why I keep coming back to it
Connect Four hits a sweet spot. It is simple enough that anyone can play in seconds, but there is enough depth that getting better feels rewarding. A round takes a minute or two, so it never overstays its welcome. Whenever I have a short break and want something light but engaging, this is one of my go-to games. Ready to drop a token?
